In Brazil, sugar cane is one of the largest agricultural products by volume and dollars produced in Brazil. Today, Brazil is the world’s largest sugar producer and exporter, accounting for approximately 20% of total global production and more than 40% of world exports. Sugar cane grows well in Brazil due to Brazil’s large landmass and geographic position near the equator and tropical environs. Approximately 60 – 70% of Brazil’s sugar is exported each year. It was the Portuguese who introduced sugar cane to Brazil around five centuries ago. Sugar cane can be used to make not only sugar, but also alcohol, which was the primary driver for sugar production in Brazil since the 1970’s. As sugar cane can be made into alcohol-based fuel, it was the government of Brazil’s program ProAlcool that drove these massive increases in cane production. Today, sugar cane accounts for about 80% of sugar produced worldwide.
